Skincare as self-care

Natalie has been exploring how to improve her self-esteem while taking care of herself on a daily basis. Over time, in her self-care journey, she discovered that caring for her skin is much more than just a step in her self-care routine, it’s a way to show love, boost her self-esteem and increase her confidence.

Today she joins the ourself team as a guest writer to inspire us to take care of our skin as part of our self-love.

My skincare journey started back when I was around 5 years old. Early? Not really! My mom always told me that it’s very important to keep your skin hydrated and healthy: of course, the way of taking care of it changes with time, but the goal stays the same.

You know when they say: «Keep doing the same thing for 21 days and it will turn into a habit”. Well, I have been doing various ways of my skincare routine for over 15 years now, every day, twice a day, and it definitely became my type of meditation.

It started with simply washing my face and keeping track of my skin condition, and with time, it evolved into a complete self-care journey taking care of my face, hair, and body, internally and externally.

My skincare routine allowed me to:

Control the state of my skin and my health

I started taking care of my skin before puberty, so I had to learn and evolve and improve my skincare habits with time. For example, when I started getting blackheads and pimples at the age of 14, I realized there’s more to hydration and dehydration: there’re hormones, diet, lifestyle, stress, and other factors influencing my skin state. I had to educate myself in various ways – through reading, watching, and talking with field experts. My self-care routine grew into a hobby, which has been here since I was in my teenage era.

Improve my self-esteem

Any self-care practice highlights 2 sides: the process itself and the result. My personal recommendation is to find one that is both fulfilling during the process and in the results stage for you! For me, skincare practice is definitely beneficial in multiple ways, one of which is feeling confident in my own skin – no matter if it’s in its best state or not, just by knowing I’m taking good care of it and I understand its needs.

Have a moment just for me, every day!

At least, 20-30 minutes just for me, my health, and my skin – isn’t it amazing? Surrounded by cute bottles and sounds of water, I’m THE moment. Also, the fact that you don’t need to leave the house and ‘prepare’ yourself for this process helps with the habit a lot. You’re actually setting the mood for the day or preparing yourself for sleep!

Summing it up, routines build us on a daily basis. I am pretty impatient, so skin-care routines are perfect for my personality: they allow me to feel the moment and see and feel the results at the same time. Taking care of the skin helps my mind to feel more stable and my body to feel healthier in multiple ways.

Now, it’s time to take you on the journey, where we are going to talk more about skincare. You are going to learn more about your skin from a scientific side and understand what it can do for you from a mindfulness side.

Stay tuned to learn more! x
